GENERAL INFORMATION

Florence is a Type A General Law Municipality and has a mayor-alderman form of government.  The mayor, Mary Condon, and five city council persons manage the City of Florence.  The mayor of an alderman form of government functions much like the city manager in a manager-council form of government.   The mayor votes only in case of a tie vote.  The mayor presides over the city council meetings and manages the flow of the agenda.  Each council member is voted into office at-large, meaning that there are not any council districts in the city.

There are several stone quarries in the immediate area surrounding Florence that produce the famous Austin stone used to build houses and other structures all over the state.

Florence will be celebrating its 152nd anniversary this year.  There are many people living in Florence that have family roots dating back for many generations.  In fact, several of the city's streets are named after families that still live in Florence and the immediate area.
